
Two ancient ingredients, one surprisingly modern rationale.
Salt works through osmosis — pulling fluid out of swollen tissues, reducing inflammation, and making the throat a less hospitable environment for bacteria and viruses. But salt alone leaves the throat feeling stripped. That's where honey enters.
Honey as a coating
Raw honey is viscous, and it sticks. After the salt has done its work, honey leaves a thin protective film across the back of the throat. That film physically protects raw tissue, slows cough reflex, and keeps the area from drying out in the hours that follow.
Honey as antimicrobial
Raw, unpasteurized honey produces hydrogen peroxide slowly over time through the glucose oxidase enzyme — it's a gentle, continuous antimicrobial. Manuka and other wildflower honeys also contain methylglyoxal, which works against bacteria that have grown resistant to antibiotics.
Why raw, not heated
Commercial honey is pasteurized at 145–160°F to make it flow and to extend shelf life. That process destroys the enzymes that make honey actually do something. We use raw honey, which is why GargleMel has a short shelf life and a real flavor.
The combination effect
Salt without honey = effective but harsh. Honey without salt = soothing but shallow. Together they handle both layers of the problem — the inflammation underneath, and the raw surface on top.
