Family guide
Salt water gargle
for kids.
A safe, gentle, doctor-recognized way to care for a child's throat when something's coming on. No dyes, no chemicals, no “cherry flavor that's actually just red dye.”
When it's safe
Most children can safely gargle from age 4+ — once they can reliably spit without swallowing. Younger than that, stick to warm tea with honey (not for under 1) and skip the gargle itself.
The kid dose
- Water: 6–8oz warm water.
- Salt: 1/4 tsp — lighter than the adult ratio.
- Honey: 1/2 tsp raw honey. Not for infants under 12 months.
- Time: 15–30 seconds per mouthful is plenty.
A GargleMel sachet is calibrated for 8oz and is family-safe at 4+.
Making it work
- Let them pick the glass.
- Demonstrate first. Kids mirror.
- Water temperature matters — cold is a dealbreaker for most kids.
- Count to 15 out loud together. It turns it into a game.
- Never force — if a child won't gargle, warm honey water (sip, don't gargle) for 4+, or honey tea for older, still helps.
When to skip it and call a pediatrician
- Fever over 101°F.
- White patches on the tonsils.
- Swollen lymph nodes.
- Trouble swallowing or breathing.
- Symptoms lasting more than 5 days.
